DESIGN BELIEFS

n designing a garden my over-riding aim is always to create a place so beautiful and so tranquil that the owners will not only delight in it themselves, but will also want to share its pleasures with others.. Of course I realise that not everyone sees beauty in the same way. Alexander Pope said, in 1730, that "all gardening is landscape painting" and that is exactly how I feel about it.. I am
not one who sees beauty in unmade beds, piles of bricks or cows in formaldehyde. Rather I appreciate harmony of colour, a graceful line and abundance of variety all in a natural-feeling composition, from which you will gather that I am not a "modernist" and am unlikely to please you if that is what you seek.

......I really do feel that in a world where so much is dark, a garden should try to embody and express all that is attractive and uplifting in life, without brashness or ostentation.

......These are the principles I aim to follow:

  1. Make the best use of the local landscape and climate.
  2. Consider the garden and house as a unified composition.
  3. Always try to appeal to all five senses - sight, scent, sound, taste and touch.
  4. Endeavour to create mystery and surprise.
  5. Be patient and do not rush to decisions.
  6. Do not be over-influenced by horticultural fashion.
  7. Tolerate nothing that jars or jangles.
  8. Pay meticulous attention to the quality of all materials and plants.
